An Arcadian Maid was directed by D.W. Griffith in 1910. It stars Mary Pickford as a young poor girl who is lured to sin by an itinerant peddler played by Mack Sennett. It made me smile. While Pickford is playing her normal put upon innocent girl, Sennett seems to be playing it for comedy It is worth a watch. By the way, for those of you not familiar with the Griffith Biograph shorts, notice the circle with the AB inside it in the kitchen. Thus was the way the American Biograph company identified their films for protection from illegal showings. This film is available elsewhere on the Archive, but I have added a period sound track for enhanced viewing.

An Arcadian Maid
No doubt a warning to all young women at the time of young men of the leading actor's type in the role played by Mack Sennett. There is a look to Mack Sennett of Alfred Molina in this role and little Mary Pickford's acting and walking skills were obviously fine tuned in her later roles to make her the finer actress she became.
A short story depicting Mary Pickford being conned into stealing from her employers or family (not sure which) through the promise of marriage by Mack Sennett who she only just met!
No doubt the money Mack Sennett earned from these shorts lead him to buy Keystone productions. Just look at how many films he made on imdb! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0784407/
